Patagonia
Here’s a list of places we recommend visiting and some extra suggestions:
Bariloche and the lake district:
Bariloche is an excellent choice for those seeking a quick and easy trip, as it offers a wide range of activities and beautiful landscapes. There are also incredible restaurants and amazing activities to do.
Bariloche is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Enjoy hiking, fishing, and breathtaking views of the Andes mountains. You can explore the Nahuel Huapi National Park or indulge in local cuisine at charming restaurants.
We highly recommend staying at the Llao Llao Hotel, an iconic luxury hotel in the heart of the stunning Nahuel Huapi National Park. From there you can take different excursions to Puerto Blest, Lago Frias, and also fishing in the lake!
El Calafate
Here you can visit the Perito Moreno Glacier and all the glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park, places you can visit from El Calafate which is the gate to this amazing area.
El Chaltén (Fitz Roy)
From El Calafate, you can reach El Chalten, a fun mountain town from where you can enjoy incredible trekking trails to the Fitz Roy Massif. Mountaineers and adventurers from all over the world come here for the Fitz Roy. Great vibes and some great restaurants in this town.
Torres del Paine (Chile)
Then Torres del Paine in Chile, a highlight in Patagonia. We recommend staying overnight in the park in “Hosteria Pehoé” for the complete experience. Otherwise, you could stay in Puerto Natales, which is the city head from where you can visit the park, but it´s not super nice. Also, from Punta Arenas, the other important city in the area, you can embark on a wonderful cruise to visit the southern fjords and glaciers in this remote area.
Ushuaia and the end of the world
If you're adventurous, consider flying into Ushuaia (USH), the southernmost city in the world, known for its unique charm and access to incredible natural parks. From there, you can visit Tierra del Fuego National Park, navigate the Beagle Channel, and embark on cruises to the mythical Cape Horn or the incredible white continent of Antarctica.
If you choose to fly into Ushuaia, there is plenty to do. The scenery here is unparalleled, with a unique blend of mountains and ocean. This is where many expeditions to Antarctica go off.
If you make it here, this is heaven for people who enjoy King Crab. We know, we thought King Crab was only in Alaska. But there is a native King Crab to Tierra Del Fuego and almost every restaurant in Ushuaia has tanks of live king crabs. This is a must-have item if you go down there.
The best hotel in the area, without question, is Arakur.
Choosing Between Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia
It's generally easier to stick to one side. While crossing from El Calafate to Torres del Paine by tour bus is manageable, driving yourself is not recommended due to long stretches without gas stations. Like the Fitz Roy in Chalten, Argentina, Torres Del Paine in Chile is epic and very worth going to. But take into account that it can provide logistical issues trying to Torres Del paine from Calafate. But it is doable and very worth it.
If you want to go to Chilean Patagonia, It may be best to just go to Santiago after the wedding and fly down from there.
In our humble, and incredibly biased opinion, Argentinian Patagonia is the better option. You will already be in Argentina as of the end of the wedding. The Argentinian side offers more lively towns and magnificent beauty while being more navigable. Sticking to Argentina simplifies logistics and flight arrangements, ensuring an easier travel experience. For example, You can make direct flights to the neighboring cities throughout Argentinian Patagonia on an internationally certified airline, without having to fly back to Buenos aires to fly back to another part of Patagonia that was near you, to begin with. In Chile, you have none of these regional direct flights and you must always fly back to Santiago to fly to a town that was right next to you to begin with. Also, it is not possible to drive throughout Chilean Patagonia by car. Only the Carretera Austral is navigable by road and it is stunning.
If you want to cross back and forth between Argentina and Chile it gets complicated. Direct flights are available from Mendoza to Bariloche, Bariloche to Calafate, and Calafate to Ushuaia. Everywhere flies to Buenos Aires.
There is also a wider array of places and hotels to stay throughout Argentinian Patagonia, which can accommodate a wider spectrum of budgets. We will be coordinating and have already been coordinating with many people already planning their trip to Patagonia. So if you plan to go, give me or Macarena a heads up and we'll hopefully manage to see you during your travel through Patagonia too.
Fishing lodges
For fishing enthusiasts, Argentinian Patagonia has some of the most epic trout fishing in the world- explore options like Jurassic Lake, Patagonia River Guides, Kautapen Group, and Yellow Dog Fly fishing, or search for local guides for simple day trips from the Bariloche area. The lodges mentioned offer incredible fishing experiences and first-class accommodations similar to what you would expect in Alaska or somewhere similar.
Hunting lodges
There is a fantastic App “The Kautapen Group” Which lists the top hunting lodges throughout Argentina. These Lodges are for serious trophy hunting, Such as the RED STAG hunting in Tupungato – right in the backyard of where we are having our wedding.
But what Argentina is known for is excellent bird hunting. Doves in particular, but ducks as well. Through this app, you will be able to view the best bird-hunting lodges throughout Argentina. These lodges are first class and deliver 5-star accommodations, food, and guides.
